Overview of the Project Koniambo
Hatch, in joint venture with Technip, is offering EPCM (Engineering Procurement Construction Management) services to the client. The joint venture will also provide pre-operational testing and commissioning assistance.

Client: Joint venture between Xstrata Nickel and Société Minière du Sud Pacifique (SMSP). Known as Koniambo Nickel SAS (KNS).

Location: North Province of New Caledonia. Southwest Pacific.

Background:
This Greenfield, pyrometallurgical facility will comprise a 60,000t/yr ferronickel smelter for the extraction of nickel from saprolitic ore mined from the Koniambo ore body. Koniambo is one of the world’s largest and highest-grade undeveloped nickel laterite deposits.

Facilities:
The laterite mine, ore treatment plant and ore-transport and stockpiling facilities (including a 12km, 700tph overland conveyor system), a pyrometallurgical ore-processing plant, coal pulverisation plant, nitrogen/oxygen plant, cooling water systems and other utilities, a 270MW circulating fluid bed boiler (CFB) coal-fired power plant, 2 x 40MW CTGs and other infrastructure including a port and coal stockpiling.
